My Honest Review of Splendid Spoon

my honest review of splendid spoon

It is no secret to anyone who knows me that I am more than a little bit of a hippie about a lot of things, my diet being one of them. I’m never fully 100% vegan, despite participating in multiple #veganuarys and meatless challenges, but I do tend to eat more plant-based than not. Mostly because I simply prefer grains and vegetables to meats, the health and environmental benefits are simply side bonuses. So when I was offered a chance to receive a free box from this plant-based meal delivery service in exchange for sharing my honest review of Splendid Spoon, of course, I was all in.

But first, let’s talk about what Splendid Spoon actually is.

Created by a busy working mom who was tired of sacrificing her health at the throne of her busy schedule, Splendid Spoon is a meal delivery service with a mission to make it easy to live a healthy life. Focusing primarily on breakfast (smoothies) and lunch (grain bowls, soups, and their newest addition, noodles) every menu option is entirely plant-based and expertly crafted by a team of nutritionists and chefs to provide you with the right mix of protein, fiber-rich complex carbs and healthy fats.

Oh, and did I mention they were easy, too?

Every smoothie comes ready to drink so you can grab-n-go on busy mornings. And every meal is microwavable, perfect for on-the-go lunches created to fuel your busy work (or home) days.

With a wide variety of flavor profiles for all of the categories, there is something in here that everyone will find appealing. And topping out around 300-400 calories (at the most) per meal, they are a healthy option for those of you who are conscious of counting calories.

Splendid Spoon is a meal delivery service, which means you’ll have a box show up at your door every week with your carefully curated (or self-chosen) options according to your plan. They have multiple different levels of plans depending on your needs, and you can skip, move, or cancel at any time. There is also an On-Demand Box option that allows you to stock up your freezer or fridge as needed without a subscription. There are multiple options for boxes on the On-Demand service as well.

Now For My Honest Review of Splendid Spoon

Unlike a typical ordering experience, my first box (and yes, there will be more) came without any input from me. Whether these particular items were specifically chosen for me or just a part of the normal selection for my chosen week, I don’t know. What I do know, though, is that when they showed up on my doorstep, I was instantly impressed with how they were packed, and the unboxing experience was wonderful.

In my order I received: my honest review of splendid spoon

  • 3 smoothies,
    • Mango Guava
    • Carrot Ginger (my fave)
    • Power Greens
  • 2 Juices
    •  Green Dreams Juice
    • Tropical Greens Juice (my fave)
  • 4 Grain Bowls/Soups
    • Coconut Curry Rice Bowl
    • Spiced Lentil and Chickpea Stew (my fave)
    • Aloo Gobi Quinoa Grain Bowl
    • Cauliflower Potato Chowder
  • 3 Immunity Shots (pleasant surprise–these were extremely tasty!)

All of the items arrived frozen and packed nicely in a pretty SS box. I put all of the smoothies immediately in the fridge (maybe not the smartest move) and the grain bowls in the freezer. Next time, I will leave the smoothies in the freezer and pick them out the night before, just to ensure none go to waste if I end up having a crazy week where I don’t get to them all. But that was my only rookie mistake. The grain bowls and soups can be heated straight from the freezer, so keeping them there makes sense. However, I found that they do heat more evenly if reheated from thawed, so if you have the forethought to take them out the night before and thaw in the fridge (or leave them all out if you’re certain you will consume them all within the week) you will have marginally better results with heating them up.

But the most important part is how they taste, right?

That’s where I found Splendid Spoon to be a splendid surprise (yes, I’m punny). I have experimented with multiple meal delivery kits and services throughout the years, to varying degrees of success and satisfaction. Meal kits, which require assembly and prep by the customer, always let me down on some level. Whether it’s mixed-up ingredient deliveries or the lack of creativity and staleness that inevitably happens with all of them after a while, I always end up canceling after a few months. Meal delivery is much the same. I’ve always found the vacuum-packed, seemingly un-fresh nature of meals delivered to my door to be the opposite of healthy and taste a little like the cardboard box they were delivered in.

Splendid Spoon, though, met and exceeded my expectations.

The smoothies and juices were all taste-forward, meaning I could detect all of the ingredients listed (the flavorful ones, at least). The Carrot Ginger, which was my favorite, hit all the right notes. But the other two were close seconds, coming in with the perfect balance of sweetness to tart. The main thing, however, which is not noticeable in a good way, is the lack of the overly sweetened, extra sugary explosion you feel with many smoothies and juices. What you see is what you get. There is nothing extra thrown in, just fruit and veggies. And they rival my beloved Clean Juice on all levels.

I didn’t feel overly full after drinking any of them. However, I will add that I never used them as a breakfast substitute, but rather as a post-yoga snack mid-morning. I like my early morning oatmeal a bit too much to let it go completely. I can see, however, if you are working outside of the home and have a long commute that makes breakfast a bear or just early mornings are a nightmare with drop-offs and meetings, one of their smoothies would definitely be a great, portable breakfast option to keep you fueled through to lunch.

The Grain Bowls and Soups were the biggest flavor surprise, though. My expectations for smoothies was higher than it was for these. I figured it wasn’t too hard to get a smoothie right, but a full meal you were then going to freeze for reheating later? That seemed like a bigger challenge.

I was wrong. And I’m not afraid to admit it.

Each and every bowl was flavorful, packed with quality grains and veggies I could both see and taste (which is saying something for a reheated meal), and delicious. My favorite was definitely the spiced lentil and chickpea stew but all four of them were meals I would eat over and over and over. I’m notoriously bad about skipping lunch if I don’t have something easy on hand to eat. I never want to take time away from my few precious kid-free working hours to throw a meal together, so to have these delicious options on hand in my fridge feels like a total win. I was fueled properly after each lunch, never weighed down and stuffed, but energetic and satisfied. And when I ate them I didn’t have my normal late-afternoon munchies because of skipping lunch, which was an added bonus.

I highly recommend them all and honestly cannot wait to get some noodle bowls to try!

But Is Splendid Spoon Worth It for ME?

Splendid Spoon is definitely not the cheapest delivery option around, so you might be wondering if it is worth it for you to give it a try. And my honest answer is YES.

First of all, you can customize your plan based on your needs. You can get smoothies only if breakfast is your biggest pain point, do a full plan to cover all 3 meals per day or adjust it somewhere in between. Secondly, Splendid Spoon uses only the best ingredients around, organic where it matters (the dirty dozen), non-GMO, plant-based, whole, and unprocessed. If you were to make a meal in your own kitchen with this same level of ingredients, the cost would just about even out. (trust me, I do this for a living).

But what you can’t account for is the cost of your time. As a former desk warrior with a long commute and young kids to tote around when I wasn’t working–I would have loved to have Splendid Spoon to save me hours of meal prep and stress worrying about packing my lunches and meal prepping my breakfast. As a work-at-home mom who doesn’t like to stop to make something healthy, even that is worth it. And finally, as the only plant-based eater in a family of carnivores, to have a ready-made vegan option on hand for those days when the rest of the Dawson clan simply cannot help themselves with Chick Fil A? That’s the most priceless of all.
