What I’m Digging Wednesday 4.21

what I'm Digging Wednesday 4.21

Welcome to What I’m Digging Wednesday 4.21. In this eclectic little mix, we’ve got a podcast from two young men who are on my “going places watchlist” for 2021 (I just made that up, by the way), pimple patches (WHAT?), a book that will help you unlock the secret to creativity, and my bougie coffee maker.

Because I am nothing if not a little off the wall and random, AMIRIGHT?

Anyway, thank you for continually showing up each week for this fun little segment. I see the numbers and I’m always surprised at how many of you click through, read and even follow some of my picks. It’s so much fun, especially when I’m sharing local people or small businesses.

My heart behind this adventure has always been twofold, as you know. I want to introduce you to new businesses, people, and products that are the “little guys” doing BIG things. These are the ones who have my heart and the ones I want to promote in every segment so if you’ve got a business or a person or a product in mind, drop me a DM so I can share them. Small local businesses are my jam.

The secondary reason for WIDW is that I wanted to find a way to connect with you over something other than food. I know I share stories about life and I try very hard to be vulnerable all over the place, especially if you follow me on social. But I’m also quite private so there are certain aspects of my life I feel like you miss out on. It’s a tricky balance of privacy and vulnerability and I don’t always get it right. But this segment allows you to see a bit more about who I am and what makes me tick in a fun and completely unobtrusive way so I feel it’s a bit like peeling the curtain back just a bit so you can see the real me.

Plus, I like weird things and I like sharing weird things so it’s kind of the perfect pairing.

  1. The Panel with Spoon and Rentie: If you don’t know the names Daniel Rentie and DJ Spoon yet, you will soon enough, because these two young men are meant for big things, the first of which being this incredible podcast, The Panel with Spoon and Rentie (available anywhere you stream your podcasts). Friends since they met in college at Texas Tech, these two guys have huge hearts for the Gospel and for helping people. Rentie and Spoon, both pastors’ kids (and Daniel is currently a minister to college students at Frisco First), created this podcast with one goal: to inspire and engage people that would never set foot in a church with the hopes of bringing them closer to Jesus. Can I get a huge AMEN for this? Please and thank you. Not only are these guys just awesme humans, but they’re also (and I’m saying this very selfishly) the people I want my teenagers looking up to and being around. They fight for social justice, they have the hard yet important convos, and they speak with love and grace, sharing the Gospel in a way that is not cringey like it is when a 42-year-old not-so-cool mom does. In other words, they’re hip and can make following Jesus cool for teenagers and being a good, strong man look something to aspire to. These guys are the real deal and I feel confident about the future of our community and beyond with young men like this leading the charge.  Please give them a follow on their socials (Twitter, Instagram) and check out their podcast on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.

  2. Daily Rituals: How Artists Work: This book was so much fun to read. As a writer and a creative mind, I’m always curious to know if how I work is normal, abnormal, or just a complete hot mess. This book puts the question to rest for good. Because, as it turns out, there is no one formula to the creative life. This book details the daily habits, both work, and play, of 161 of the world’s most famous creatives from Franz Kafka to Charles Dickens to Charles Darwin. Filled with everything from writers who followed dogged routines each day with strict personal word count goals to the quintessential night owl artist who slept all day and worked in fits of passion (and drugs) all night, this book is inspiring, surprising and a fascinating read. I would read a few “rituals” each night before bed and found them all highly entertaining. It’s available at our local library for rent or can be purchased via small booksellers everywhere.

  3. The Mighty Patch: I’m not sure why I didn’t include these little patch miracles in my Skincare Must-Haves. Clearly, I need to do a little adjusting because the past two Wednesdays I’ve had a new skincare item on the list. Anyway, these hydrocolloid patches are little pimple miracles. They’re nearly invisible when placed on an active pimple, which is awesome for us people who work at home and even those that don’t. The hydrocolloid helps draw all of that disgusting gunk inside of a pimple while also protecting them from further infection via dirt and makeup. Whenever I have an unsightly bump hanging out, I will throw one of these on and go about my day, knowing that I’m basically fighting acne like a superwoman on the DL with my invisi-patch. I have noticed they greatly shorten the duration of pimples and lessen the overall pain and irritation as well. The boxes last forever, too, so they’re great to have on hand just in case. I highly recommend. Grab a box HERE.

  4. Keurig Coffee, Latte, and Cappuccino Maker: Quite possibly the most bougie thing I will ever include in a WIDW, this Keurig is just flat out amazing. If you know me, you know coffee is my lifeline. I try to kick the habit, I really do. But, y’all, coffee is just good stuff and I don’t wanna. So there’s that. My first cup of the day is always from the vintage percolator (nothing brews like old-fashioned percolators, trust me) my father-in-law tirelessly hunted down for me. This is non-negotiable. But creeping into my daily routine is a mid-morning latte from this gorgeous one-stop coffee shop. I’m convinced that this device, while a large investment, has saved us twofold in coffee shop charges and has greatly improved my work at home life. Every day around 11 I make myself an almond milk latte with a splash of vanilla if I’m feeling saucy, and it brings me so much joy. If you’re in the market for a new coffee maker or just want to improve your at-home fake barista life, this is the investment you need to make. Grab yours HERE.

Thank you, as always, for sticking around for another What I’m Digging Wednesday. You guys are seriously the best.

Peace, love, and Wednesdays,
Meg
